If jink was the life blood of sigil, then the Great Bazaar was its beating heart. The crown jewel of the Market Ward, and the base of the Indep Faction, more money changed hands here in an hour than most kings might lay claim to in a lifetime of conquest and prosperity. Colorful pavilions stood abreast tottering manses, while fleeting stalls sprung up in their midst like weeds. Ramshackle corridors cut arbitrary swathes through the lot, each crowded with a slew of hawkers barking out their prices, only to be swiftly undercut by the next in line. Boisterous buyers jostled over mutually desired wares, and closed windowed sedan chairs ferried the rich over the backs of the unvigilant and sluggish of foot.
Hadrian wended his way slowly through the seas of fortune seekers, eyes leaping from one table of commodities to the next, and hands firmly about his coin purse. He had stumbled on an area that suited his purposes quite by chance. Above the nearest alcove there was a fading painted sign advertising for potions and elixirs. A stall that was little more than a carpet unfurled on the cobble stones bore a selection of amulets guaranteed to prevent all matter of evils for just a handful of coins. A few paces beyond, a smallish alehouse served its customers under the moniker of ’The Scryer’s Ball’.
Striking off towards an unoccupied corner, a rare find in this part of the city, Hadrian produced a piece of chalk from within the folds of his robes and began to write on the crumbling plaster sidewall of an arcane antiquities shop. As he scribbled his letters in a strong, confidant hand, he began to mumble softly under his breath. One by one, as each character was completed, it burst into soft white light.
Taking a step back, Hadrian paused to consider his work. It read:
The Black Scribe
Arcane and Divine Scrolls and Theses
100gp for the First House
Second and Third by Commission
Nodding in satisfaction, he pocketed the chalk and enacted a second incantation. At the conclusion of the spell, a wavering disk of translucent force manifested three feet above the ground and hovered there inexplicably. Taking a seat on the flawless surface, Hadrian crossed his legs, smoothed out his wrinkles and waited for a customer to take notice.
