(Okay, then, pending everyone's approval:
Boat 1: Piers, Robert, 4 crewmen Boat 2: Vatndir, Niloufar, Holger, 4 crewmen Boat 3: John, Nuuko, 4 crewmen
The player of Renna, the other bariaur, won't be joining us for the plot, but we might see her around in freeform.)

Having sharpened his sword, and being (rather uncharacteristically) completely unwilling to gamble, and being exhausted from a rather long and bilious ilness brought about by the bucking of the decks, John passes out on his boat, darkened skin burning still further as he does so. A look of contentment and ease passes across his face as he does so. And he doesn't snore, too much anyway. Just lies there and closes his eyes very tight, so that it looks like he is squinting in his sleep.

"Forget him, I wanna pick stones," Nilou says. "Vat, I'm no fool. Keep an eye on me as I try to leap across? I'll likely need your help."

John is no doubt splashed by another jump, grunts, and rolls over irritably as the salt water burns his already scalded skin. "Bother" He grumbles to himself.

(Oh, sorry -- I had a misleading post. At the moment, people are congregating on Boat 2; there's no need for Nilou to jump. Not that that has to stop her. )

Vatndir places his arm up in front of Nilou. "Skald..." He pauses, looking at her with some confusion, "I think I understand the Allure of falling into the ocean and being rescued by me is something you want to experience for the first time, but I imagine it would be safer to stay in the boat with the gem sack. I think it best you don't jump unless you have to."

"Aww. I wanna be rescued. Promise me you'll do it before the year's out?"
Nilou then clambers back from what clearly would have been a disastrously awful leap and sits crosslegged in front of Piers, limbering up her hands for stone selecting...

John rolls over, startled awake by Nilou's voice, and says, "Be careful, or Vatndir might well imagine me rescuing you, which would surely be something of an annoyance to you." John smiles as he says it though, doing his best through showing his teeth, and some degree of vulnerability, to indicate there's no malice or cruelty in his attempted joke.

"I imagine a way of rescuing both of you would be something challenging even for my mind to think of." Vat said, keeping John's joke. "Though I imagine its worth the effort."
"And of course, dear Skald. I'll think of some way to need to save you from a watery grave before years end."
Vatndir settled into position to rescue any other drowinging berks, and waited his turn for a second draw.

As he's pulled, flailing and sputtering, from the briny drink Nuuko quickly crawls away from the edge of the boat almost shouting in an unfamiliar language. The tongue is very airy and almost lilting, but the prime's tone clearly confers anger and perhaps a bit of confusion.
After a moment of choking and gasping on the deck, the lanky elf realizes he's now safely back on one of the boats. After a deep breath, Nuuko visibly composes himself and stands hesitantly. Letting out a decidedly annoyed sigh, he approaches the proffered gem bag. With a wry grin and a nod to Robert, he immediately plunges his hand into the leather bag and draws four gems at once. After a moment or two of inspecting his new acquisitions, the dark-skinned elf deposits them in a black velvet bag inside his belt pouch.

Nilou scowls at the sodden elf. It was my turn, you berk, she thinks, but there's no point in harrrassing him.
She limbers up her fingers again, and picks four stones.

John continues to look out to sea, paranoid about anything else that might be out there, riding the waves or sneaking up on them. Because given his luck, something should show up to be a problem sooner, rather than later.

Nilou can't help herself. Moving achingly slowly, she edges towards John, out of his line of sight behind him, reaching with a finger primed behind thumb to flick his ear (or thwack his helmet)...

"Unless you want to wake the bariaur," Robert says. "Go on, draw 'em -- they don't do any good in the bag," he adds with a smirk.

John appears not to notice, not least of which is that his sense of hearing is not nearly as sharp as his eyesight. Also, he's looking for external threat, not internal mischief. His ears are cauliflower-shaped, like most brawlers, and rather bulbous, but not to exaggerated, goblinoid proportions.

"Oh!" Vantdir said with a smile. "Holgar, of course. Tell you what. I'll draw for him, and I'll set the stones aside for when he wakes."
"first for Holgar" [dice=28] [dice=27] [dice=26] [dice=25]
Vatndir shifts the stones into a pocket for the Bariur.
"Then for me" Taking the same time as previously, Vatndir slowly drew his own stones. [dice=24] [dice=23] [dice=22] [dice=21][rand=08513809289067986501327004293825380166819172455979561940158019774]

Nilou is clearly in crisis. She wants to thwack those cauliflower ears, but it's too easy. Too straightforward.
And she's torn about actually touching those things. Sure, she's never done it before, but she's handled cauliflower proper any number of times.
"You are so thick," she says under her breath, while John persists in not noticing her at all.
Ah--epiphany: she's never been smacked upside the head by John, or any large meatwall type fighter. An upside-head-smack would be a reasonable reaction to expect to an unannounced violation of earspace.
So she thwacks his ear, and awaits the results....

Whirls around with a heavy, backhanded swat, growling for a moment, and his shock is betrayed even as his arm commits to the strike. Clearly he was neither prepared for, nor expecting, any sort of annoyance from behind him, and he's even more shocked ot find the culprit. If he hits her, and most likely hard, at that, he'll grunt, and say, "I'm sorry." Almost shockingly fast.

Nuuko watches the tiefling closely, unsure of what she's trying to do. When the dark elf sees the decision cross Nilou's face he grins slightly, still waiting to see what transpires. Whirls around with a heavy, backhanded swat, growling for a moment, and his shock is betrayed even as his arm commits to the strike ... If he hits her, and most likely hard, at that, he'll grunt, and say, "I'm sorry." Almost shockingly fast. The dark-skinned prime laughs loudly at what would have been his own action - if he found himself in John's place. He plunges his hand into the bag of gems and withdraws four more. Again, the Athasian elf gives the gems a few moments inspection before depositing them with the first four.
