"The bebilith didn't eat the spark. It.... took it. I don't exactly know how. I was there and I still don't understand it... it just exploded and end up in the beblith. The explosion is what took my face away." Tllith's neck-frill goes flat. " Oh, no! We've got to get the spark and your face back! How do we do that?"

"The separation of a spark is a rare happening -- it has been hundreds of years since Minod divided from his. Three things were needed to reunite him with it. The first, the Chalice of Peace, is one of the sacred relics we keep within the monastery. I will release it to Tllith's care.
"The waters of Lake Serene are needed to calm the troubled spirits. Collected in the Chalice, they can cool any temper and relieve any pain.
"Finally, a Gem of Harmony is the only vessel strong enough to house celestial power. When submerged in the waters, it can be used to capture the spark. One such gem is woven into the nest of a phoenix in the Thione hills.
"And, of course, you will need the bebilith and the deva, both alive."

Tllith opens its mouth once; there is a scent of bitter chamomile, but no words. It tries again, producing a scent of burnt metal, but still no words. On the third try, it manages to say, " How do I carry it? What if it breaks?"

" How do I carry it? What if it breaks?" " While the Chalice is gone from the Monastery, it is yours. You may entrust someone else carry it for you, but you are responsible for ensuring its safety and returning it to its rightful place."

" While the Chalice is gone from the Monastery, it is yours. You may entrust someone else carry it for you, but you are responsible for ensuring its safety and returning it to its rightful place." Tllith looks proud and fierce for a few moments: proud and fierce and very, very scared. And it muses on the journey ahead, and gets even more scared. Then, since it's obviously the party newbie berk chatterbox, it feels obliged to ask the next questions: looking around at Cedric, John, Shadow, Xianna, and anyone else who may have joined. " Well, I'm sure everyone else probably knows everything important, but I've never been very far from the monastery yet, so ... could somebody tell me a few things?"
- Where's Lake Serene? Do we need any special things to carry its water --
like, do we need to carry it in the chalice? Does the chalice have a lid?
- Does the chalice do anything else useful ... like, well, healing?
- Where are the Thione Hills?
- What's a phoenix like? Dangerous intelligent monster that's kind of
Goodish?
- Do we need to take the gem away from the phoenix, or could we borrow it,
or just use it while it's part of the nest, or what?
- Where's the deva? For that matter, what's a deva? And what
happened to this one? Aside from it blowing up and hurting my new friend, I mean.
- Where's the bebilith? For that matter, what's a bebilith?
- What do we do when we have all the people and magic thingies?
- Who is everybody else? I think John must be some sort of warrior person,
I guess.
Then it looks at its forepaws and the vicious scalpels that tip all its fingers. " And can I get a box to carry the chalice in?"

The bariaur Sirocco trots into the courtyard wiping the last remnants of oatmeal from his mouth and listening intently to the music in the air.
"Sorry folks, I was hungrier than a Baku in heat. What did I miss?"

John looks annoyed by the new gaggle of chattering fools in general and moves his head so that his half-visor almost covers his chin, indicating he's got little to say, at least for the moment.

Father Cedric waits patiently for the flurry of questions to pass, something to which he's obviously become accustomed.
"I will impart some of what The Song has shared with me." The monk straightens up a bit, his tone changing to somewhere between conversational and a chant.
"The deva Ybdiel, first Servant of The Song, shed his spark to travel the deepest pits and hells on an errand most holy. The spark passed from the mortal recipient to the bebilith Abaia, an Abyssal hunter of fiends. Called by Ybdiel's mission, Abaia has found herself here, but does not understand why.
"To save the people of Principality, the Waters of Serenity and Gem of Harmony must be carried, in the Chalice of Peace, to the Labyrinth of Ornwood Forest, where all must share in the trials of the spark-bearers. Only in remembering benevolence and peace can the just decision be made.
"Returning the spark will save Ybdiel, but kill the being of goodness that Abaia has the potential to become. Allowing it to remain with Abaia will kill the deva. If the Labyrinth is walked with righteousness and selflessness, it may save them both."

John scowls, "Peace, Justice, Benevolence. These are words that have little meaning in my world. I do not think I am the right person to do this... But debts must be paid."
He looks to the rest of the group.
"I will carry you as far and as long as my strength holds out. But you must not mistake me for a man doing this for the sake of good, or because it is -right-. I simply am paying a debt, for the deva saved me from certain death."

Tllith listens to the monk's instructions with its ears spread wide, doing its best to make sense of them. It's obviously used to Cedric giving a few oblique answers to a storm of straightforward questions; it doesn't press him for more details. It prowls around the garden a bit, thinking, carelessly shredding an oregano plant with its claws when it steps on it.
Naturally, it's thinking about the wrong problem: "Maybe we can find a map in the scriptorium!"
Tllith nibbles its tailtip a bit, trying to make sense of that, too. "Maybe that's why The Song picked you for this? 'cause I don't think the bebilith started out doing it for the sake of good either. I bet it'll understand you better than anybody else."

Xianna also feels out of her depth. She looks around to those who traveled here with her (hint hint Ned!) and says aloud, "Whoa, I was just hired to get the dark on why that thing came traipsing through the Cage. I'm not here for all that do-good quest to save the deva bit. Especially with an addle-coved kid dragon," she hisses the last bit under her breath.

Tllith swivels a big fan of an ear towards Xianna as she talks. " My coves aren't addled! I dug them myself, there's one under the tree there, you can see for yourself." It blinks confusedly. " This is very weird: how could you confuse a cove? It's just a nook." Thereby Tllith proves Xianna's point.

For a man seemingly lost to the world, Hadrian had absorbed a great deal of the insipid conversation. He rose from his solemn vigil against the buttressed wall with a gentle cough. The aasimar's gaze could rival an auger for its sudden penetrance.
"John," he began in hushed tones. "For once I think your morals may be the least conflicted. Let us have this chalice and be gone. The deva will die ere this lot reaches a consensus. And ashes to the map - Elysium will take us where we have to go."

We need to go ... we need to go now! We can talk while we travel!" It pops around the oak tree and digs up a set of dragonlet-sized saddlebags, and struggles to fit them on itself. " Oh, no! Where's the chalice?"

Vahn is brought out of his mental machinations not by the growing crowd nor by the ongoing conversation, but rather by the words "center of the multiverse." Staring at Sirocco for a while with a slightly sickly expression, he sighs as the small dragon shifts to another conversationalist and begins speaking to the Sensate in a long-suffering voice. "There is no physical center of the multiverse, unless you're talking to a Signer, which you probably shouldn't." The previous Sigilian street-dialect seems to have vanished, replaced by a more precise and scholarly tone. "The center of the multiverse is more an idea, a concept, rather than a place... and if it did exist, it sure as the flaming hells wouldn't be Sigil. Sigil's simply a passageway of sorts, a hub, but not the center..." The last is also directed at Tllith with a meaningful look that probably flies right past the his head.
Nodding to himself, Vahn smiles slightly at John's small speech, and mutters, "Taker indeed..." Straightening and feeling his papers, he smiles once again. "I'm in this t' the end if just t' see what these 'trials' are. Separation of a deva spark, and the passage of it into a bebilith... absolutely facsinating..." He shrugs slightly and sighs, staring at nothing. "I'd be lyin' if I said my conscience wasn't pushin' me into it as well though..."

"You must set out today if there's to be hope of saving anyone," says Cedric. "Time is short. It may be a more dangerous recourse, but some of you might fill the chalice while the rest recover the gem. Then again, the powers of the Abyss are moving to silence Ybdiel, and if one effort fails then all is lost. I cannot offer counsel to this; the path of the future is unclear."

Nodding, the Indep plops back down onto the grass and begins filing his papers into his backpack. "Which is closer, the nest or lake? We can hoof it t' one an' find a gate from there." He looks up for a moment with a stern expression, locking eyes with Xianna, Nuuko, and anyone else who seems reluctant to go. "Back out now or see it t' the end, bashers, there ain't other options here."
