Since Nilou now has an interesting new point of origin, here are some loose (very) thoughts:
She was born in the Abyss, but doesn't know it.
Mum and dad find her as she washes up on shore/clatters to the ground/appears out of nowhere in front of them (maybe she was kidnapped from an important Abyss denizen? Maybe it's some sort of longer ambit?). Mom has always wanted a kid, and of COURSE this is exactly what she asked for.
As she grows up, she wrestles with her own drives and instincts, and around the time she hits 20 she has a personal crisis. She knows what she is, and though her folks haven't said she's "adopted" she still knows it's the truth. It takes her some work to realize that she doesn't have to be selfish and destructive, and that it's actually in her best interests not to be. Experiencing something doesn't always mean destroying it or consuming it, and often--if efforts are made to preserve or take care of something--better results follow.
Treat a barkeep well and get discounts on new draughts. Dont pick all the flowers off a tree and get fruit later on.
Now, this isn't to say she's all sweetness and light--it takes real effort sometimes to think this way--but it's a challenge she wants. She's living a way most other tieflings don't, and that's a unique experience in itself.
And things have to be experienced to be accepted and believed. No matter what Mom says.

Hmm... I hate to gainsay, particularly in matters of people's creativity... but could you keep her history a first-person account rather than being from the perspective of an omniscient narrator? After all, nobody knows for sure the circumstances surrounding their birth and upbringing apart from what they're told later in life -- and part of the personal plot brewing for Nilou involves bringing light to some of the details of her origins.
Also, as a favor, could I ask that you try to condense future posts? The four that you sent a short while ago could easily be assembled into one... it wouldn't normally pose a problem, but hotmail isn't kind with its storage space, and I'm trying to keep records of things as best I can. : )

I'm just writing it that way to sort out ideas. Actual background--which I can now see yuo'd like to have--is a bit more polished, and I'll stick to your 1st-person request. And I'll definitely consolidate posts. It's a pain for you AND me. Switch to Gmail. I'll send you an invite, if you like.
