(Grease worked; the creature has to make a save every round it remains in the area of effect or lose its actions while it slips and stumbles. Round 1's save failed. Round 2's save was successful, but it doesn't look like it'll live long enough to carry out an attack.)

(If anyone would like to turn these die rolls into a description of the combat, I'll award some bonus XP.)
The flame from Gl'Fnak's hands sears the great beast, temporarily blinding everyone using infravision. The stench of charred fur and flesh fills the cave, and after clearing their eyes everyone can see the ruined body of a bear, killed defending its winter lair from intruders.
