(For righting the shrine, Gl'Fnak and Hadrian receive a +1 to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability/proficiency checks for their remaining time in Asgard.)
Hilathic and Quicksilver take the rough-cut path into the woods, hoping to find a settlement, tribe, or home who can offer another yule log. Hadrian and Gl'Fnak take the road through the bumpy lowlands.
Wading through the snow that collects between the steep, rocky hills is slow going, but progress is still possible. The wind gusts occasionally, bringing a biting chill and causing the flame of the log to flicker. The snow falls lightly -- a very unusual thing for Ysgardian weather, which is normally all-or-nothing.
While leading the ox through knee-deep snow, there is a brief blur of motion in the dark....
(Wisdom checks, if you please.)

((Wis check, target 13 or less; If the blur is concealed by some sort of mind-affecting spell/ability, does my Cipher bonus apply?)) [dice=20][rand=0050162261398146724686265188015911430295638343610508277602169205212]

Glimpsing the blur of motion, Gl'Fnak instinctively drops into a defensive stance. The silvery-blue long sword slips quickly from its scabbard into the tiefling's right hand. His left hand points in the direction of the swift little form, fingers crooked into the starting shape of an arcane spell but waiting. A second or two passes before the Cipher relaxes his arm and sheaths his sword again. "Just a cat," he says over his shoulder in Hadrian's direction. With a nod forward, he swiftly moves to the fore of the ox-cart again. Once again scouting a short distance ahead to find the smoothest path the hills have to offer, he continually scans the hilltops and little valleys, looking for anything to indicate habitation.

Hadrian nodded in agreement, his eye tracking the beast until it had departed from his sight. "Aye, cutter. Lets carry on, and hope we find another lodge again soon." The aasimar looked back over his shoulder at the smouldering log and contented himself that they still had sufficient time to accomplish all that they intended.

Without turning his head, Gl'Fnak offers a nod in acknowledgment and continues onward.

Progress over the next hour is impeded by slicing winds and the snow -- driving with the force of a sandstorm, deepening to waist-high in the places of heaviest snowfall. The stark hills have turned to rocky outcroppings and gorges, and visibility is greatly hampered (though the twisting valley -- almost a canyon, itself -- in which the Cipher and Bleaker find themselves limits even the reduced line of sight).
Surprise checks

A low grunt, barely audible beneath the wind howling through the canyon, puts everyone on the defensive, aware just in time as a something hurtles through the air toward Hadrian.

Hadrian narrowly dodges a large object that falls nearby in the snow -- a net?
Something scrambles down from a hidden position on the rock wall -- something large. Humanoid. It's impossible to make out the details from this distance, but it seems that whatever it is has no intent of staying so far away....
(One round until it closes for melee.)

Gl'Fnak raises the crossbow from his side, expertly fits a bolt and lets the shot fly at the approaching creature.

Hadrian chants a brief benediction, upon the conclusion of which his skin takes on the hue and texture of rich oak. Ready to meet his foe head on, the Bleaker sets his spear to take the brunt of the charge.

Seeing his bolt fly wide and the Bleaker preparing for the charge, the tiefling steps to the side and back beside Hadrian. Gl'Fnak quickly pulls the crossbow's strap up over his head so the weapon is slung across his back and draws the silver-blue blade from his side. He watches the approaching assailant, waiting for it to impale itself on Hadrian's spear or to at least reach striking range.

Whatever the creature is, it stands two feet taller than Hadrian and Gl'Fnak; it's built like a heavy infantryman who's let himself go, with a prodigious belly, stooped shoulders, and massive limbs. It wades through the snow purposefully, raising a large war club over its head....
(1=target is Gl'Fnak, 2=Hadrian) [dice=2][rand=455219519335818588084900472824058089930892057056841793110306178]

[I'm rusty on my mechanics here. Does setting the spear provide a mechanical advantage or is it just flowery prose? Rolling all the dice I can think of. Hadrian's AC is -3 (I think!), with the enemy further penalized to hit by 2. THAC0 is 15.]
The aasimar held his stance until their assailant was nearly within striking distance before lowering his mark and standing fast against the butt in the hope the giant would skewer itself upon his pike.

Whatever-it-is vs. Hadrian AC 3 THAC0 15
Initiative [dice=10+7]
Attack (+2 Strength, -1 weather, -2 celestial aura) [dice=20-1]

(I'm pretty sure I still hit then... Rerolling damage with the appropriate die.)
[dice=8+1]
(And then double the result? Here is a second die roll below if its not a multiplier.)

(It wasn't a charge maneuver, just a move-attack; in a charge, at the cost of a +2 initiative and -1 AC penalty (along with loss of Dex bonus), the attacker gets +2 to hit If it were the special maneuver, Hadrian would deal more damage (no extra dice necessary, just double the result), but the attack bonus from the charge would also bump the attacker's roll up enough to wound him. As it is, though, Hadrian still hits and the attacker misses.)
(Edit: the +1 shrine bonus doesn't apply to damage, just d20 rolls: attack/ability/proficiency/saves. On the upside, a two-handed shortspear deals 2d6 to size L creatures, so you can have another damage roll if you like.)
