A character must be literate to take a level of Mage. If Mage is a character's first level, one skill point must be spent toward Literacy.
Level 1: Spells. The Mage has a physical compilation of spells (whether by scrolls, books, or other methods) that he must study nightly to access.
Level 1: Bonus Feat. The Mage receives Scribe Scroll automatically.
Level 1: Summon Familiar. The Mage may purchase appropriate material components (worth 1000 GP) and perform a ritual over the course of 12 hours. At its completion, the ritual locks on to a random local animal to become the character's familiar. If the Mage wishes to determine a new random animal, he may extend the ritual by another hour with a Concentration check (DC 15+number of prior extensions). If a Concentration check fails, so does the summoning; the Mage must rest before attempting the ritual again (with new material components).
Level 5: Bonus Feat.
Level 10: Bonus Feat.
Level 15: Bonus Feat.
Level 20: Bonus Feat.
Mages may select as a bonus feat any Metamagic Feat or Item Creation Feat.
