"Get to the house of Utadas Tensar. Tell him you need minders. Pay them what you wish."
The voice pauses as the embers of the pipe glow brighter and crackle softly. The toe of a boot -- crimson and brown, made from some sort of reptilian scales -- taps out an involuntary tic in the lantern light. A gout of smoke diffuses lazily into the haze around the cell doorway.
"A high-up of ours -- a chronomancer -- requests three still-burning Yule logs from the plane of Ysgard. Through some digging, we've discovered a shifting portal that will send you to one end of a very populated earthberg.
"Once there, how you acquire them is your prerogative... but they must be returned to the Gatehouse still burning."

Still burning? That was no simple request. Perhaps there was some incantation that might assist him, though Hadrian hardly had time enough or for that matter leisure to research such a thing. Idly he wondered at what game the high-ups were playing that would even necessitate such an unusual request.
“As you wish,” he replied, his tone respectfully neutral. “Where will I find the portal you speak of and what is its key?”

(Utadas Tensar is a priest of the Fraternity of Order; he formerly served as a judge in the City Courts, and is currently the proprietor of Tensar's Employment Service in the Clerk's Ward, the planewalker's equivalent of a temp agency.)
"It isn't for a fortnight or so that the Sigilian end of the portal will reappear. We have a contract with the Gateseeker to locate the portal and discern its key as quickly as possible, so it is vital that you and your minders be ready to leave town at a moment's notice. The gate is no good to us if Yule has come and gone by the time you've arrived, of course.
"Try to have affairs in order within seven days. You will be reimbursed for your supplies and the wage you promise your hired men."

Hadrian rose from his seat and made ready to depart. “I will begin preparations at once,” he affirmed, but paused with his hand resting comfortably against the cold stone walls obscured from his sight by the impenetrable shadows. “A thought occurs, however. My patron is a chronomancer, yes? Are they able to supply me with a device or incantation to slow the logs’ burn? Or is that feat up to my discretion.”

"It is being seen to. You would do well to look into it for yourself for certainty's sake."

Hadrian nodded; there was nothing left to discuss. Now he had only to make the appropriate arrangements. Quietly he ascended the narrow stairwell into the dusty corridors above and headed out into the city.
