In rereading Warlock, it looks like the power doesn't have to come from a dark pact of any kind, but can also stem from taboo behavior and negative emotion (and, to a githzerai, any visible emotion is a very bad thing, so that could well set you up).

Heh -- even tanar'ri don't often benefit by being close to each other. It's estimated that they outnumber the baatezu almost 100 to one, they just can't win consistently on the battlefield because their superior numbers tend to turn on and start slaughtering themselves.
"Tanar'ri, baatezu. Only difference is, you collect before the job with the former, and after the job with the latter." -- A common word of advice among yugoloths

well, we could maybe come across a stray and coax the information from him, or, I was thinking the tanar'ri might be interested in the map, eh? our patron can still get his map, but we can buy passage out with a copy maybe?

Certainly possible -- just be exceptionally careful when dealing with a tanar'ri. The trick is to always act like you're capable of killing them (the lesser ones, anyway -- the greater ones might try and take you to task, which is bad), never given them any reward for services until after you've taken them for everything they're worth, and don't expect any promise from them to hold unless they're terrified of you or you have something they desperately want.
