- Grew up on the Hive streets.
- Mom was a Hiver beggar who couldn't have supported a kid if she wanted to. She turned him loose pretty early, and he learned to look out for number one.
- He started breaking in and burglarizing homes, which paid for some things, but robbing Hivers won't get you off the streets.
- His first contacts with the Dustmen were just bringing in bodies off the streets, usually so they wouldn't get in the way of a planned job, but sometimes just to clear out a sleeping/hiding spot in an alley.
- Being around the Mortuary, he heard bits and pieces of Dead teaching, and it grew on him. He knew his life wasn't much of one, so it was hardly a leap to say his life was no life at all.
- He joined the Dead as a way to move up in the fake world, as well as move up toward the "real" one, should such a thing exist.
- He learned magic under Dead tutelage, as well as how to read and write Common and speak the languages of the Bariaur and Githyanki (I just picked two at random, they could change if we come up with something that makes more sense.)
- He started doing field work because his aptitude ran that way, and because it gave him a firsthand education that was lacking from the stay-at-home study of many Dustmen aspirants.
- Between adventures, he frequents lectures and seminars held by the Dead to get that side of his education. Often the speaker is working from discoveries made by Jonas or one of his colleagues. He may end up as one of those graybeards, if he gets stuck in this stage of death longer than his body can sustain an adventuring career.
- He's not above personal gain on the side of his faction work. A certain amount of personal affluence frees one to explore one's death; would there be time for study if he still had to work the Hive and run from the Hardheads between expeditions?

Did some shopping, using the price lists from d20srd.org where yours were imcomplete. Should be all good unless I overflowed the capacity of my backpack. In addition to the spellbook, I'd like him to have a general notebook such as I described in my Mortuary post, which I'd assume is cheaper (and of lower quality) than a spellbook. The SRD only lists paper by the single page, so can you put a price on a cheap leger or something like that?
